Linoleic acid belongs to the omega fatty acids group, which perform vital functions in the body and are necessary for optimal health and physical condition. The conjugated form of linoleic acid is also known as CLA. It is beneficial in numerous health conditions, including heart disease and cancer, and can reduce body fat. Certain foods contain CLA, and it can also be taken as a supplement.
Controlled study published in the December issue of the 2000 edition of the Journal of Nutrition, found that CLA reduces fat and preserves muscle tissue. According to the manager of the study, people who consumed CLA have fats decreased by nearly 3 kg, compared with the placebo group. The study concluded that approximately 3-4 grams of CLA per day is the level required to achieve positive effects on body fat.
Research shows:
- CLA increases the level of metabolism
- It could have a positive effect in patients with problems related to the thyroid as hypothyroidism
- CLA reduces fat in the abdomen area: an imbalance of the adrenal gland and hormonal changes common to problems with the thyroid gland, often cause rapid accumulation of abdominal fat, so this benefit could be very useful
- CLA increases muscle growth
- Reduces cholesterol and triglycerides
- Reduces insulin resistance: the resistance to insulin constitutes a risk to certain patients with thyroid disease
- Helps for easier weight control
- Reduces allergic reactions to foods
- Promotes immune system
